The cut pile vs loop pile decision shapes every rug you make — and often determines which tufting gun you buy. These are not interchangeable settings on the same machine (unless you own a 2-in-1). They are fundamentally different pile structures with different tools, textures, and design strengths.
What cut pile looks and feels like
Cut pile tufting guns snip each yarn loop as it passes through the backing cloth. The result is a soft, velvety surface similar to wall-to-wall carpet or a plush bath mat. Lines blend smoothly, mistakes in tension are less visible, and the texture photographs well for social media — which is one reason cut pile dominates beginner tutorials.
Typical specs: 8,000–12,000 SPM, pile height 10–20 mm. Most wall hangings and Etsy rugs use cut pile.
What loop pile looks and feels like
Loop pile guns leave each yarn strand as a visible loop on the rug face. The texture is structured, almost like a large-scale latch hook or Berber carpet. Loop pile excels at geometric patterns, text gradients, and designs where you want individual yarn strands to read clearly.
Loop pile shows tension inconsistencies more readily than cut pile. It rewards precise frame tension and steady hand speed.
Gun types: dedicated vs 2-in-1

Can you convert pile type after tufting?
